International Conference on Environmental and Social Justice, Fordham University, May 1-2, 2023

Toolkit co-founders presented a paper entitled “Academics but not Activists: The Medievalist Toolkit for building bridges between disciplines”. This presentation proposed an approach for academics to engage more actively and effectively with a public audience, first by highlighting the role of academic research as a support mechanism for social justice work, and then by explaining the Medievalist Toolkit’s collaborative digital methods. Essential to this approach is the utilization of neutral language, directed at informing rather than activating or convincing a public audience, applied in an active manner to digital spaces. Alongside other panelists presenting digital projects directed at social development, this presentation focused the discussion on how academics can engage the general public in their work.
